GUCULIYA: BLACK-SMOKED CERAMICS FROM HAVARECHCHYNA

(Lviv region)

THE VILLAGE

Havarechchyna is a small village in the Lviv region, famous for its unique "black-smoked" pottery. During the Soviet era, many traditional crafts were suppressed in favor of mass production. Havarechchyna almost lost its art, but a few dedicated masters kept the flame alive against all odds.

CRAFTED BY MASTERS

Today, there are less than a dozen craftsmen who continue the pottery tradition in their native village. In the best times, there were about 70 of them.

Every piece by Guculiya is a result of collaboration with local artisans, including master potter Mykola Bida.

These are not just art objects. From striking vases to heat-retaining serving ware, every piece is designed to be a functional part of your home life.

THE TECHNIQUE

The secret of these products is that they are baked in a wood-fired oven, and at the final stage, when the temperature exceeds 1000 degrees and the clay is actually fired, the last firewood is thrown into the wood compartment, after which the oven is covered with earth. There, in hermetic conditions, even during the burning process, the magic of the Havarets ceramics takes place - a reaction of recovery of metals, which are very abundant in the local soils, takes place, and the products are saturated with carbon. This makes them durable and gives a recognizable, deep shade with a characteristic sheen.
