About
This ethnographic photo album is a comprehensive result of the digitalization of unique beaded artifacts from the private collection of Volodymyr Shchybrya, a prominent Ukrainian ethnologist and collector. This publication is a definitive guide to the rich tradition of Ukrainian beadwork, featuring 219 exquisite beaded ornaments for both men and women, alongside 31 specimens of traditional folk clothing adorned with intricate beadwork.
For the first time, this volume presents traditional beaded jewelry from every region of Ukraine where the craft flourished, including: Lemkivshchyna, Boikivshchyna, Hutsulshchyna, Pokuttya, Opillya, Zakarpattia, Bukovyna, Podillia, Volyn, and Polissya. Most of the artifacts date from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Many are being introduced to the scientific and artistic community for the first time, complete with their authentic historical names.
Beyond its historical value, the book serves as a practical manual. It includes detailed patterns and schemes for selected items, allowing modern artisans to recreate and reimagine ancient ornaments in contemporary designs. The album is also enriched with a large collection of rare archival photographs showing Ukrainians in traditional attire, illustrating how these beaded treasures were historically worn.
