Kuindzhi was a native of Mariupol and descended from an ancient lineage of Greeks who had lived in the Black Sea region since antiquity.
The painting, depicting a sunset over the Dnipro River, is considered one of the artist’s final great masterpieces.
The original artwork is housed at the renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, while the original sketch was kept at the Kuindzhi Art Museum in Mariupol.
In the spring of 2022, Russian forces looted and transported this piece — along with other valuable exhibits including works by Aivazovsky, 19th-century icons, and a Greek Gospel — to Donetsk.
The current whereabouts of these exhibits remain unknown.
