The phenomenon of World Vyshyvanka Day is truly remarkable. What began as a small student initiative in the city of Chernivtsi has scaled into a global movement. Today, in over 100 countries, millions of Ukrainians and people standing in solidarity with Ukraine celebrate this day every year on the third Thursday of May.
The holiday has become such an integral part of modern Ukrainian culture that many assume it has existed for centuries. In reality, this initiative is only 20 years old. It was conceived, brought to life, and built by a group of young Ukrainian students — now adults— who have always believed, and continue to believe, in the Ukraine of their dreams.
While the celebration lasts only one day, the team works year-round, developing major research and educational projects both within Ukraine and abroad. As a result, World Vyshyvanka Day has become an indispensable tool of cultural diplomacy and a vital representation of Ukraine on the global stage. Although the holiday carries an exceptionally bright and joyful spirit, the story behind the scenes is one of years of struggle, resilience, and the relentless defense of Ukrainian identity.
This book is more than just a source of inspiration to believe in your own ideas; it is the first time the authors openly share their journey — a path forged not because of favorable circumstances, but mostly despite them.
